Watson elected Secretary and Treasurer of the Statewide Defense Attorney Association | Local
MATTOON – John F. Watson of Craig & Craig, LLC in Mattoon was elected Secretary and Treasurer and to a position on the Illinois Defense Attorney’s Executive Committee at the organization’s annual meeting , which was held on June 24. Watson will progress in the positions of the Executive Committee to become president in June 2027.
He previously served on the IDC Board of Directors (2017-2022) and served as Chair of the Association’s Amicus Committee and Editor-in-Chief of the IDC Quarterly and the IDC Survey of Law.
Watson has been an attorney with Craig & Craig, LLC since 1999. He became a partner in the firm in 2003 and continues to practice in Mattoon’s office. His areas of practice include general civil litigation, medical malpractice defense, municipal liability defense, insurance coverage and insurance law, and intellectual property law.
He received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Bradley University in 1990 and received his JD, with distinction, from John Marshall Law School in 1993. While in law school, Mr. Watson served as an editor in deputy editor of the John Marshall Law Review and had his note published in the winter 1993 volume of The John Marshall Law Review on the issue of public education in Illinois.
He began his criminal law practice as an assistant state attorney, before quickly rising to the rank of felony prosecutor. In 1997, Mr. Watson served as the Special Assistant Drug Prosecutor with the Office of the State’s Attorney Appeals Prosecutor, conducting drug prosecutions in Illinois’ Fourth District. In January 1999, he became the first Assistant State’s Attorney in Coles County.

In July 1999, Mr. Watson was hired by Craig & Craig and focused his practice on civil litigation, medical and professional liability matters and insurance litigation. He is a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and handles intellectual property matters.
