Job Summary:

LOCATION ALERT: This position is located at the Arizona State Penitentiary Complex – Lewis, located between Buckeye and Gila Bend; it is 55 miles from downtown Phoenix.

The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry (ADCRR) is seeking an experienced plumber to be regularly involved in planning and leading an inmate work crew in general maintenance and construction.

Job duties:

  • Plans, supervises and directs the work of inmate teams

  • Maintains inventory of plumbing tools and equipment

  • Repairs water heaters, sinks, toilets and boilers

  • Installs and cleans plumbing drains, fixtures and water lines

  • Perform general maintenance as instructed by supervisor

  • Driven for state affairs

  • Performs other duties appropriate to the mission

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA):

Knowledge of:

  • General building and preventive maintenance

  • Water heaters, water softeners, boilers, drainage, waste systems and backflows

  • Plumbing tools and supplies

  • plumbing codes

  • National and local building codes and safety practices

  • Commercial gas lines

  • Basic Plans

  • Basic computer skills to include Microsoft Suite

  • Creation of reports and graphs

Competence in:

  • Written and verbal communication

  • Planning of maintenance repairs and the preventive maintenance program of the installation

  • Time management and organizational techniques/methods

  • Establish and maintain interpersonal and employee relationships at all organizational levels

Ability to:

  • Read and understand blueprints, diagrams and sketches

  • Renovation, installation and construction services

  • Prison work

Selective preference(s):

  • One (1) year of journeyman level plumbing experience

Pre-employment requirements:

Requires possession and ability to maintain a valid, state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive for the state are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10 -207.12).

Employment is dependent on the selected candidate passing a background investigation, drug test, and medical/physical examination.

Positions in this classification participate in the Correctional Officers Pension Plan (CORP).
