Government of Canada appoints Chair of Renewed Structured Response Unit Implementation Advisory Group



OTTAWA, ON, July 23, 2021 / CNW / – The government of Canada aims to ensure that federal correctional facilities provide a safe and secure environment conducive to the rehabilitation of inmates, the safety of staff and the protection of the public.

Today, the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, the Honorable Bill Blair, announced the renewal of the Structured Response Unit Implementation Advisory Group (SIU IAP) and the appointment of Howard sapers as president for a period of two years.

The renewed committee will reflect a wide range of perspectives, knowledge and experiences related to federal corrections and the unique needs of federal inmates. Information on the appointment of additional members of the Group will be published shortly.

The Minister also took the opportunity to thank Dr.Anthony Doob, chair of the SIU’s first IEP, which was established in September 2019 for a period of one year, and announced that Dr Doob has agreed to continue as a renewed member of the SIU IAP. Dr Doob continued to write and publish reports on SIUs based on data made available by the government of Canada.

Once re-established, the renewed committee will monitor, assess and report on issues related to the continued implementation of Structured Response Units. Public Safety Canada will provide a secretarial function to support the Committee in its work and to liaise with the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) as required.
