Critical Daughter, Security Guard Also Injured In Chicago Shooting | Crime-and-Courts
CHICAGO – A girl was seriously injured and a security guard was also injured in a Chicago high school shooting, authorities said.
The girl, a student at the school, was shot in the abdomen three times and was in critical condition at Comer Children’s Hospital, police said. The guard was shot at least six times in the left arm and back and was in fair condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center, police said.
The shooting took place shortly after 3 p.m. at Wendell Phillips Academy High School in South Chicago as the school let out, authorities said.
Chicago Police Detective Chief Brendan Deenihan said the guard had just opened one of the doors when he was shot. The girl had apparently just come out of the doorway.
The gunman fled, Deenihan told reporters outside the school.
âThe security guard opened a door and immediately there was an offender in the street who started shooting in his direction,â he said. “We don’t know if it’s targeted or not,” he said.
No one was in custody late Tuesday afternoon, Deenihan said.
The motive for the shooting was not immediately known.
