This is participation number Three for students in the following courses. Recall you must make two posts - one original and one response to a classmate.
All Union Institute and University Fall 2009
(Includes Session I, Session II and Semester Learners)
You must make two posts to receive full credit.
Discuss how what you have learned thus far will impact your career. For those of you currently in government service, take the lead. Tell your future colleagues how you see what you are learning having a direct impact on what you are doing now. For those of you whose careers are yet in the future, how as what you have learned changed what you think about your potential career? Recall that you are to, at a minimum, make one original post, and then respond to one other person.

This is my next to last session at Union. I initially began this as a "checkbox" to fulfill a requirement for advancement to Lieutenant. As I moved through the program I found the courses truly enjoyable and expanded my method of thinking. Having been out of school for 20 years, it was initially difficult to get back into learning but the coursework opened my eyes to the "bigger picture" in law enforcement management.
I have learned, and enjoyed, the work so much that I will not be stopping and will be looking into completing my Masters upon completion of this program.
I strongly encourage anyone considering enrollment to go for it. It is well worth the effort.

This is my fist session at Union and not my last. I think that this program is truely worth my time and effort. I have never thought that after 20 years that I would want to go back to school. This program will change my approach and management style.
I look forward in learning and acheiving my goals in my career. I would recommend this program to anyone and further stress the importance of continuing their education.

I am on the down hill side of my experience here at Union. Mine is a similar story, returning to school after a nearly 25 year vacation, enjoying my career and having fun being a police officer and detective. I started this because of a good friend and mentor, who called me a late bloomer a few years ago when I promoted to sergeant. My entire outlook on life, education, and policing has changed because of this experience. I have bought into the concept of leadership and what it means to lead. Like other posts my outlook on management has also changed. I look forward to maybe putting this all to use and promoting another step, not for gain, but to be the best leader I can be. No seriously, I mean that.

| I think it is funny how our stories are usually the same here at union in the CJ program. I congratulate you both for your endeavors and wish you well. I believe that what we do is a calling, corny I know, but true.

| After completing this course I only need to complete two other courses and I am done. It has been a great experience taking these courses. There is so much knowledge that i have gained from the management perspective of Criminal justice. The knowledge of terrorism that I have acquired will help me in the future as I plan on returning to the military as an officer.

rmarin,
Even though this is your fist session you will quickly adapt to the instructors. Returning to school is one of the best choices you made. Stay motivated and good luck!!

| I've got eight more classes to take. The feeling of accomplishment is, as it pertains to education is really phenomenal. In a way, taking classes has jump started my life. I know that scheduling time (school, kids sports, family time, work ect) is something that has to be done. Learning and using the knowledge will have a huge impact on my outlook regarding leadership. I have always felt that I was a leader, or had the ability to be a leader. The experience has sharpened my leadership "tools".

It sounds like we're in the same boat (my second session). Keep on plugging away. In a few short months, this experience will be over. Who knows...maybe you'll move on and fulfill other educational goals. Sometimes it seems like things might be a bit out of control, but it'll all work out.

With the majority of my courses completed, I can truly see the impact the CJ program has made in my day-to-day job, as well as preparing me for future promotions.
For anyone considering a future in law enforcement, this program will certainly put you a step ahead of the game. The courses will help broaden your "big Picture" view of the criminal justice field, from top to bottom.

M. Arcadia,
You hit the nail on the head. Although life is hectic, completing this program will certainly be beneficial towards being "leader." I wish you the best of luck in the future.

Unlike many of you, I am near the end of my career. This is my first class (for a grade!) in 33 years of police work. School for me is very personal. I am not doing this to promote, and I am very happy where I am professionally. I will add that this process is opening doors that I struggled thru before, and it would have helped with promotions. So I think that I will emphasize the value of school to anyone who will listen at work!

Max I like the "tools" reference. I agree, the more tools, the easier the job (within limits!)

My experience so far has had a tremendous impact with my career. The courses so far have reinforced my role as a supervisor, and stimulated my efforts to move forward with promotional opportunities. My supervisors and peers have been interested with my progress, and some may have been influenced to continue their education as well.
I put school on hold for over twenty years, finding reasons to put it off. Completion of this program will not only provide a piece of paper, but satisfy a goal that I have always had.
The Criminal Justice Management Information and Management of Criminal Justice Programs classes have been a challenge, but I am continuing to learn. Expanding my knowledge is something I am committed to. When I share my Union experience with others, it reinforces what I encourage, and strengthens the level of trust.

This police technology class is my first class of 7 needed for my BS. Having been in law enforcement for 20 years I can truely say that the profession has changed a lot in the field of technology. The last 3 weeks in this course have broadened my knowledge and made me more comfortable with change.
Of course, traditional police skills and experience will always be important - this class and any experience with technology training will make us more effective in the information technology dependant society that we have become. I know that many of these technolgy related skills are absolutely mandatory for certain assignments and poromotional opportunities.

Excellent remarks. I can certainly relate to your situation. I have also been in law enforcement for over twenty years. Just yesterday I was discussing the tools we had twenty years ago with what is available today.
The classes we are taking help reinforce the changes and allow us to adapt more comfortably.
