| Technology is a never-ending process that will only continue to grow and improve. Just like all new things, there are pro's and con's to each. With the new and improved technology assisting us in our daily practices, it will be scrutinized every step of the way. And people will always be out there trying to crack the new technology. This class really breaks apart each aspect of technology as it relates to criminal justice. It has given me a real insight to what all is out there and how it works. This knowledge will be very beneficial to me as a continue my career.

In reply to cmuirunion...
I agree with what you said. It is up to each Department to set aside a budge for technology. Gone are the days of "old school" policing where it was done the hard way. Technological advances have given today's police officers many new tools to fight crime and identify trends. Without technology, we would be lost.

For me the most important thing I've learned is that I should have done this when I was at home with my parents, not 27 years into a career.
The timing couldn't have been better as I am not technology savvy and this course has taught me things I was not aware of. Moreover, knowledge is always important to broaden ones' perspective. Whether on line or in the classroom it is very important to revisit the basics.

| Jeff, I can relate to your memories of 1984. Today, it seems like we had nothing but a pencil and paper back then and I often wonder how we ever got anything done. I also remember thinking, back then, how any of our predecessors got anything done without MDT's or ROVERS.

The main thing I learned is how little I actually do know about current and emerging technologies in the law enforcement field.
In our first writing assignment, we were tasked with reveiwing a criminal justice related web site. I discovered that not only the website I reviewed, but the sites that my classmates reviewed were a goldmine of criminal justice and law enforcment related information. Obviously, I had no idea that these sites existed. Since then, I have utilized some of these sites as sources for our writing assignments and can see myself accessing these sites in the future for any number of reasons.
Something that has become abundantly clear to me is the need to stay current on emerging technolgy and learning how it will benefit me in any future assignment. How much it will impact my career remains to be seen. But one thingf is for certain, failing to remain current and not taking advantage of every opportunity to learn new technology will eventually derail my career.

| I came on the job a little before you but I agree. The technology is improving by leaps and bounds and it's so important for department's to keep up with it. Unfortunately, the criminals' technology gets better and smarter too! Law enforcement has to keep on top of it.

| Ok lets try this again. I have learned there is a vast amount of technology and information at our hands to utilize. There is also alot of it available to people who are not in law enforcement. I think those of us in law enforcement have a duty to be responsible and ethical with any information we obtain about victims or possible offenders. It must be accurate, relevant, timely, private and in context and that we have a responsibility to use it wisely in a world that is just being turned upside down. People look to us for stability and we give that by doing the right thing with the technology and information we are privileged to. We are to protect people in this huge judicial system by being fair and impartial in our duties. We are the gatekeepers to average everyday folks who are at the mercy of our profession. We are likely going to be there first contact with the system so we need to be looking out for their best interest. They pay the bills so we should respect there position right or wrong and insure due process and victims rights are handled properly at our level.

These posts about the internet reminds me of the first time I heard about the Internet or World Wide Web. I've always been on the computer and can remember my 1st modem, a whopping 300 baud per second. (Now, what are they? One hundred billion a second?) Anyhow, I spent all of my time on Bulletin Board Systems and when I heard all about the internet, I immediately upgraded my computer and got internet access because I did not want to miss that train!

Tom,
Great movie, is it fiction yet? I believe we see this on CSI already, the way i see it we probably have this ability now, it is the cost from keeping us from obtaining this new technology. What do you think?

This course has helped me to remember how important school is for me. It has helped me to use the internet in ways that will help our department grow more efficient and it has helped me to seek a better understanding on technology.

| This class has shown me how much technology is out there and how fast it changes. It has also shown me that there is tons of information resources and where to locate them For example the Department of Justice website which contains statistics about anything that is law enforcement related.
