The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) has recently issued the following solicitations. Please be aware that you must submit your application electronically using Grants.gov. Biometric Technologies

Deadline: October 30, 2006, 11:59 p.m. eastern time.

 

NIJ is seeking applications for funding the development and evaluation of biometric technologies, or novel applications of biometric technologies, that will (1) reduce crime, (2) enhance law enforcement and corrections officers' ability to correctly identify cooperative and non-cooperative individuals, and (3) fix the identity of individuals in the justice system.

Sensors and Surveillance Technologies

Deadline: October 30, 2006, 11:59 p.m. eastern time.

 

NIJ is seeking applications for funding research and development of sensor or surveillance technologies, or novel applications of those technologies, to address specific needs in criminal justice. NIJ is particularly interested in the following three areas:

 

Concealed weapons detection (CWD) at a safe distance; Through-the-wall surveillance (TWS) for locating and/or tracking individuals within buildings; and, Other novel sensor or surveillance technologies, applications, or support functions for specific criminal justice applications.

Forensic DNA Research and Development

Deadline: October 30, 2006, 11:59 p.m. eastern time.

 

NIJ is seeking applications for funding research and development that can enhance the forensic uses of DNA technology. This solicitation focuses on technologies that result in faster, more robust, more informative, less costly, or less labor-intensive identification, collection, preservation, and/or analysis of DNA evidence collected from crime scenes. Priority will be given to proposals focusing on the following:

 

General improvements to the "front-end" of the forensic DNA analysis process; Physical separation of the components of a mixture; Body fluid/cell type identification and characterization; Identification and/or characterization of genetic marker systems that have the potential to reveal additional or more powerful information about the source of the biological evidence; Improved tools for examining aged, degraded, limited, damaged, inhibited, or otherwise compromised DNA evidence; Species differentiation; Novel methods for genetic profiling for forensic use.

Geospatial Technology

NIJ is seeking proposals for research, development, testing, and evaluation initiatives that address the geospatial technology needs of State and local criminal justice agencies and other agencies that collaborate with them. Additionally, NIJ may support—for uses within the law enforcement operational environment—the application of new technologies not developed specifically for law enforcement.

Research and Development in the Forensic Analysis of Fire and Arson Evidence

Deadline: November 13, 2006, 11:59 p.m. eastern time.

 

With this solicitation, NIJ seeks proposals for research and development in fire and arson investigation for criminal justice purposes. This solicitation is aimed at improving the ability of forensic analysts and investigators to locate and identify probative evidence from fire scenes and to enhance the ability of crime laboratories to analyze fire evidence. NIJ is particularly interested in the following areas:

 

New or improved tools and technologies to aid in interpreting a fire scenel; Improved understanding of chemical signatures found at fire scenes (e.g., burn patterns analysis); Improvements in the laboratory analysis of fire debris.

Postconviction DNA Testing Assistance Program

Deadline: November 16, 2006, 11:59 p.m. eastern time.

 

NIJ is seeking applications from States wishing to receive funding to help defray the costs associated with postconviction DNA testing of forcible rape, murder, and non-negligent manslaughter cases in which actual innocence might be demonstrated. Funds may be used to review such postconviction cases and to locate and analyze biological evidence associated with these cases.

Graduate Research Fellowship 2007

Deadline: November 28, 2006.

 

The Graduate Research Fellowship is an NIJ annual program that provides dissertation research support to outstanding doctoral students undertaking independent research on issues related to crime and justice. Students from any academic discipline are encouraged to apply and propose original research that has direct implications for criminal justice. NIJ encourages diversity in approaches and perspectives in its research programs. NIJ awards these fellowships in an effort to encourage doctoral students to contribute critical and innovative thinking to pressing criminal justice problems.
