Well my time at UI and U is drawing to a close and so is my Computer Crimes course, so I am going to share my final thoughts. First I want to say I have learned more about computers than I ever thought I wanted to know. Yet somehow like a moth drawn to the flame, I am drawn deeper into the cyber world of curiosity and wondering how everything works. When you consider the fast pace that technology is evolving, you have to wonder what will it be like in 10 years...
I have found the entire class interesting and became very interested in those little cyber parasites like spyders, trojans, worms and how they work. Intriquing little digital creatures.

Whew! I have just completed the final research paper for Computer Crimes. It is on phishing. For those that don't know, phishing is where the cyber-thug creates a replica e mail for PayPal, a Bank, the IRS or similar business. This fake email is sent to the intended target with the idea of tricking them. The fake email indicates there has been a breech of security, a refund is due or similar topic to solicit personal information from the target. If the information is obtained, it is used to withdraw funds, commit credit card fraud, identity theft or other electronic crimes.
Like fishing, computer phishing uses bait or a lure to try and catch the phish (victim). Once the information is retrieved the phish is released to be caught again. In many cases a substantial amount of time occurs before the victim realizes they have been scammed.
So when the cyber-thugs go phishing for victims, law enforcement should go fishing for the cyber-thugs.

| I did research on Phishing when I took Computer Crimes, as well. As technology becomes more advanced, there are more and more ways for people to become victims of Internet crime. Phishing is a dangerous phenomenon that has become a very common problem with Internet users in the recent years. It is hard to pinpoint and eliminate phishing but as a computer user, it is critical to become aware of the many phishing techniques used by these criminals! After doing my research, I actually received fake emails, one looking like it was from Paypal...it actually looks very similar to the real Paypals. Computer-users need to be aware of what scams exist over the Internet. AMAZING! Good luck to you!

This has been a great course - really who does not like technology - it really does help out in our careers. I like the GPS when checking out residences and roadways in regards to writing and serving warrants. It is very helpful. Obviously new technology is coming out every year and it is hard to kepp track of everything. Plus our departmeents can't afford all that new stuff anyway. However, it is all very interesting.

You are right, it is very hard to stay one step ahead of the criminals - especially when it comes to computers. It seems that tweekers have nothing to do all day but tweek on their computer - consequently they become very proficient on it. All we can do is take classes to enhence our abilities.

I think I need to go back into the syllabus because I don't believe I read it right and I want to make sure I get full credit. My final thoughts on the course. I enjoyed it and I did learn a lot. The book was well written and easy to read, especially since I am not that technologically savey. The most interesting part for me was the instructor. He was very knowledgable and and expanded the course. I do not have anything off the top of my head that I would have explored deeper. The least useful part for me is the group project. At this point in my career I have done a number of groupl projects and do not need the practice. The other issue for me is the distance we all are from each other in my group. We are not remotely close to each other to be able to really meet and conduct a group project. I understand that we can use this site and email to communicate but that defeats the purpose of a group project to me. But I enjoyed it and do recommend the course.

MK,
I agree with you about the GPS also Google Earth, while not real time, has been usefull too in obtaining a physical description for warrants as well as neighborhood areas during swat calls and other critical incidents. The biggest thing I have found about GPS is to make sure that the software is updated each year

PAU 450, business, government and society has been a good experience. The text is relatively current and uses examples, such as the Martha Stewart inside trader case, that one can personally reflect on from their own experience. Additionally, I found it interesting that some of the discussions on ethics in the text are turning into reality in business today with the collapse of sub-prime mortgage industry, the credit crisis, and the cost of oil and related products. The course makes you think about what really goes on in the federal government. I am not a conspiracy thinker by nature, however I have got to wonder what is happening when an oil company makes 12.1 billion dollars in profit in one quarter and misses the expectations set by analyst.
I would combine the last two questions into one answer: What I would want to explore more, and the least favorite part of the course. The least favorite was the website review because I did not have any burning personal interest in the websites an their contents. Having said that, I do have personal interest in current events and would have liked linking the text to current events rather than the websites.

I wish my time was drawing to a close as I am more like half way through the process. The course you are finishing up sounds like interestesting and useful information. I agree that technology is fast paced, and it is anybody's guess where it will go from here. Technology takes some time to learn upfront, although it saves time in the long run.

Being exposed to areas of information technology is far more complicated than I ever imagined. The exposure I received from this course with regard to the reading and the issue papers will definitely have an impact on my career as we continue to move down the technology highway. I'm not sure that we can keep up pace with the ever changing world of technology, however; just simply understanding it is half the battle.

Interesting stuff on Phishing. I think alot of people sort of get worried when they get an email from their bank or credit card requesting information, and that is why they work. I for one learned years ago that most banks and credit cards etc won't ask for that kind of information through an email, so I have yet to get hooked by one of these scams. I also figured if my bank or credit card really had an issue with my account, they would call me via land line or send me a letter to home requesting that I contact them directly.

Overall the course was very informative. I acquired knowledge that will benefit me both in my personal and professional life. The most interesting part of the course was learning about crime prevention through environmental design. While the topic was touched upon I would've liked to explore this concept in more depth.

| I too found that portion of the book interesting and useful. While these terms are commonly used most people don't have a true understanding of their capabilities, I have gained a better understanding of these terms. I will definitely use Foster's Technology book as a resource.

| The information in this class has reminded me on just how important it is to keep up with the times. As technology advances, it would be easy for us to be left behind. Crime becomes more advanced and opportunity to victimize people becomes increasingly more profound. Although I will never be a computer forensic specialist, I definitely have a new found appreciation for what potential there is in technology.

| I agree with you on the not being big on technology. This class is however, very interesting and has opened my eyes to how important it is.

I agree. The technology is advancing very fast and the applications to us, as law enforcement, is becoming greater everyday. If we do not stay on top of what is available to us, we will miss out on some great opportunities to solve crimes and apprehend more suspects.
